AOL to sell over 800 patents to Microsoft

NEW YORK (AP) ? AOL Inc. shares surged Monday to their highest level in more than a year after it said it has agreed to sell 800 of its patents and license others to Microsoft Corp. for about $1.06 billion in cash.

The New York-based Web site developer and Internet access company said it plans to return some of the sale proceeds to its shareholders. After the sale, AOL should have about $15 per share of cash on hand, it said.

AOL shares jumped $7.78, or 43 percent, to $26.20 in morning trading, adding about $750 million to its market capitalization. Microsoft shares slipped 37 cents, or 1.1 percent, to $31.15 in morning trading.

In February, one of AOL's largest shareholders, an investment firm, said it would nominate candidates for the company's board because it wasn't doing enough to make money from its patents. In response, the company said it had already begun to look at ways to unlock patent value.

Patents have become a hot commodity in the high-tech industry in the last few years. They're useful both for attack ? for suing competitors ? and for defense ? for warding off lawsuits with threats of countersuits. Software patents can have broad applications, and thousands of patents can apply to a complicated product like a cellphone. Google Inc. is buying phone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. for $12.5 billion to get hold of its patents.

After the sale, AOL said it will still hold over 300 patents and applications covering a variety of core and strategic technologies including advertising, search, content generation, social networking, mapping, multimedia, and security among others.

AOL also received a license to the patents being sold to Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft Corp.

"The combined sale and licensing arrangement unlocks current dollar value for our shareholders and enables AOL to continue to aggressively execute on our strategy to create long-term shareholder value," AOL Chairman and CEO Tim Armstrong said in a statement.

AOL said it will determine the best way to distribute a "significant portion" of the sale proceeds to shareholders before the sale closes, which is expected to happen by the end of this year.

AOL owns news sites like Huffington Post, Engadget and Techcrunch, but still makes much of its money by providing dial-up Internet access.

Ex-Texas FBI agent gets prison in NYC for lying

NEW YORK -- A former Texas FBI agent who was convicted of making false statements about a confidential source after having an intimate relationship with her has been sentenced in New York to a year and a day in prison.

Thirty-eight-year-old Adrian Busby (BUHZ'-bee) of El Paso was sentenced Monday.

Federal sentencing guidelines had called for more than two years in prison, but Judge Harold Baer (BAY'-ur) Jr. chose half of that. He noted that Busby's marriage ended and he must care for three children with medical problems.

Last year, Busby was convicted of four counts of making false statements.

Authorities said Busby had a sexual relationship with the woman in 2008 and 2009 after she became a confidential source. She had been arrested on identity theft and related charges.

"Beginning in the middle of May, the midnight sun brings sunshine all night long," Haagensen told SpaceWeather.com today. "Already some daylight is visible at the horizon at midnight. There is still enough darkness, though, for the last dance of the auroras."

Here's a time-lapse movie of the northern lights' last dance that was captured by Jan R. Olsen, a photographer who lives in Olderdalen, Norway. "Not many days left with the aurora," he wrote. "This was shot on the night of April 2nd. Soon it will be too light in the night to see the aurora."

Even though the northern lights may be on the wane, the southern lights should be hitting their prime ? and the people in the best position to see the show in the south are the astronauts on the International Space Station. Aussie Stosur sinks Venus at WTA Charleston tennis

Australia's Samantha Stosur booked her semi-final spot at the WTA Charleston clay court event with a pair of three-set wins, ruining the prospect of an all-Williams clash.

Stosur, who turned 28 last Friday, ousted world number 87 Venus Williams with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win in the quarter-finals to set up a semi-final showdown against Serena Williams.

Stosur, of the Gold Coast, was leading Galina Voskoboeva 4-2 in the first set Thursday when the match was halted because of rain. First up Friday on center court, No. 2 seed Stosur finished off Voskoboeva with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 third-round win. She was back on court less than two hours later to face Venus.

"I don't think it was the end of the world to get out there and play this morning," Stosur said. "Today was very different than what we've been playing in, so it was good to get used to the conditions. I would have preferred not to play two three set matches, but nevertheless, I'm happy to be through."

Serena reached the semi-finals on Friday when injury-cursed Sabine Lisicki quit their last-eight clash in floods of tears.

The American fifth seed was 5-1 ahead in the first set when Lisicki -- whose career went into a tailspin in 2010 when an injury left her barely able to walk -- retired after falling and hurting her ankle.

Stosur posted her first career win over Venus after losing four straight -- all in straight sets, including three on clay.

Stosur hammered four aces, won 61 percent of her first-serve points and saved eight-of-12 break point opportunities.

"It's only one win compared to I don't know how many times she's beaten me, five or six, but of course I'm very, very happy to have beaten Venus now," Stosur said. "It's always a good challenge coming up against the players you've never beaten, and I've always struggled against her game, but thankfully I was able to turn it around."

Seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus, who was playing on a wild card invitation, made five double faults and won just 42 percent of her second-serve points. The 31-year-old Venus is trying to rebuild a ranking dented by a lengthy injury and illness layoff.

It has only happened eight times that a WTA player has defeated both Williams at the same tournament: 1998 Sydney (Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario), 1999 Sydney (Steffi Graf), 2001 Australian Open (Martina Hingis), 2002 WTA Championships (Kim Clijsters), 2004 Los Angeles (Lindsay Davenport), 2007 US Open (Justine Henin), 2009 US Open (Clijsters) and 2010 Rome on clay (Jelena Jankovic).

Serena won warm applause from the crowd as she tried to console the stricken Lisicki.

"I totally get it," said Williams, who has endured her own battles with injury and illness, when asked if she sympathised with the German.

"I just told her it would be all right. I'm in an emotional time in my life, so I told her, 'Don't cry, because you're going to make me cry,' and I was like, my eyes are getting watery.

"I'm always crying. But it's not the French Open now. At least it happened earlier and you can recover. It's okay. I've been through those injuries, and it sucks. It really, really sucks."

Serena posted her second career win over Lisicki, following a 6-1, 6-2 rout last year in the semis of the Stanford event.

In the other quarter-final contest, Czech ninth seed Lucie Safarova surprised fourth seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia 6-3, 6-3 in an 85-minute match.

Zvonareva, a two-time finalist here in 2010 and 2008, also won their only previous match.

In the night match, 14th seeded Polona Hercog easily defeated No. 13 Nadia Petrova of Russia 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the semis where she will face Safarova on Saturday.

WeeksMD ? Stem cells and colon cancer. Ask your oncologist.

?Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center?researchers have identified a new population of intestinal?stem cells?that may hold clues to the origin ofcolorectal cancer.

This new stem cell population, reported March 30 in the journal?Cell, appears to be relatively quiescent (inactive) ? in contrast to the recent discovery of intestinal stem cells that multiply rapidly ? and is marked by a protein,?Lrig1, that may act as a ?brake? on?cell growth?and proliferation.

The researchers have also developed a new and clinically relevant mouse model of colorectal cancer that investigators can now use to better understand where and how the disease arises, as well as for probing new therapeutic targets.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in theUnited States. These tumors are thought to arise from a series of mutations in intestinal stem cells, which are long-lived, self-renewing cells that gives rise to all cell types in the intestinal tract.

For more than 30 years, scientists believed that intestinal stem cells were primarily quiescent, proliferating only rarely in order to protect the tissue against cancer. Then, in 2007, researchers reported finding a population of intestinal stem cells (marked by the molecule Lgr5) that were highly proliferative.

Those findings ?really changed the way we think about intestinal stem cells,? said Robert Coffey Jr., M.D., Ingram Professor of Cancer Research, co-chair of Vanderbilt?s Epithelial Biology Center and senior author on the study.

?It came to so dominate the field that it raised the question about whether quiescent stem cells even exist?and that?s where we enter into the picture.?

Coffey?s lab studies the epidermal growth factor (EGF) signaling pathway ? which includes a family of receptors known as ErbBs ? and its role in cancers of epithelial tissues, like the intestinal tract.

Postdoctoral fellow Anne Powell, Ph.D., led the recent experiments showing that Lrig1, a molecule that regulatesErbB?activity, is present in intestinal cells that have the qualities of stem cells (self-renewal, and the ability to produce all the cells of the intestine).

?Essentially, what we show is that the Lrig1-expressing cells are stem cells and they are largely quiescent,? Powell said. ?We also show that they?re distinct from the Lgr5-expressing stem cells that had become a sort of ?hallmark? stem cell population?with different gene expression profiles and different proliferative status.?

They also showed that Lrig1 is not only a marker of intestinal stem cells, but also acts as a tumor suppressor and inhibits the growth and proliferative signals of the ErbB family ? acting as a sort of ?brake? on cell proliferation that can lead to cancer.

Postdoctoral fellow Yang Wang, Ph.D., eliminated Lrig1 in mice and showed that nearly all of those mice developed intestinal tumors, providing further evidence suggesting that Lrig1 functions as a tumor suppressor.

The findings underscore the importance of ErbB signaling in the behavior of intestinal stem cells from which colorectal cancer may arise.

Most exciting, said Coffey, is that the mouse model his lab has generated as a part of these studies is one of the only mouse models to develop tumors in the section of the intestines where most human tumors develop: the colon.

One additional advantage of this model, in contrast to others, is that the tumors develop quickly and can be easily monitored with endoscopy, which will make it easier to assess how therapeutic interventions are working.

?We are fairly confident that this will be the ?go-to? model to study colon cancer in mice for the foreseeable future,? Coffey said.
