A Florida woman died Tuesday after being crushed by her friend's homemade elevator.

Margaret Elizabeth Harrison, 66, was found underneath the mechanical lift, which is used to access the upper floors of her friend's home in Weeki Wachee, Fla., the Tampa Bay Times reported, adding the coroner confirmed the elevator crushed her to death.

The building's owner, Robert Blair, built the lift in the 1990s. The retired engineer welded an old forklift to a concrete base to create the elevator, which takes 13 seconds to get to the building's third floor.

Blair's wife, Jean, had sent the elevator down in anticipation of a visit from Harrison.

Blair built the lift as an alternative to the spiral staircase, the Times reported.

In Florida, lifts in private homes don't require permits or inspections. The Times said Blair's lift didn't have an electrical permit or required safety switches.
